20 Air Travel Tips
- Get there early. It's a good idea to get to the airport as early as possible. After 9/11, security requirements have gotten more stringent, which means longer wait times at the gate. Getting there early ensures you do not miss your flight.
- Know the luggage guidelines. Always be aware of your airline's luggage guidelines in terms of carry-ons and packed bags. Some airlines charge extra per carry-on bag over the initial one, so be prepared for this unexpected potential charge.
- Only pack what you can in terms of toiletries. Another fairly recent security guideline is the amount of ounces you're allowed to carry in terms of shampoo, lotion, and other toiletries. Make sure you don't go over this amount, or security can (and will) confiscate them.
- Have your ID handy. If you're traveling abroad, be sure your passport, ID and wallet are all on your person, so you can enter through customs quickly and don't have to fish around for them.
- Bring a book. For long flights, there are often movies provided by the airline, but just in case, a nice book is a great way to escape and pass the time.
- Have tissues handy. A lot of people experience runny noses or sinus problems while flying, so be sure you have a little travel pack of tissues easily available just in case.
- Don’t reserve your ticket with the airline. Most airlines charge much more than various online travel sites, or travel agents will. Airlines will not give the best price in most cases, so shop around.
- Choose the best seat. If you are able to pick a preference, think about where you would like to sit. It could be a window or an aisle seat, and at the front, middle, or back of the plane. Find out which seats are available and choose according to your needs or wants.
- Separate your luggage. When packing, make sure you pack the essentials you'll need to get to quickly in your carry-on luggage. Otherwise, it will take a while to get to the checked in baggage and you might need something immediately.
- Look for electronic kiosks. Most modern airports have areas where patrons can check in on their own. This method is much faster than standing in line at the counter.
- Use a luggage tag. Always use luggage tags and include your name, address, and a valid phone number in the unfortunate event that your luggage gets lost.
- Join the frequent flyer program. If you fly a lot, it's a good idea to join a frequent flyer program so you can rack up points to get free upgrades, discounted tickets, and more.
- Think about the timing. Most airplane tickets are less expensive if you're staying through a weekend. Try to time your trip accordingly to get the best deal.
- Prepare the kids. If you're flying with children, make sure you have all of their necessities including some forms of entertainment so they remain calm and do not get bored.
- Safety first! Always be sure of the airplane's exits and pay attention to the safety announcement at the beginning of the flight. Each plane is different, so there may be different requirements to keep you safe.
- Avoid the caffeine. If you're flying on a very long flight, caffeine should be avoided. This is because caffeine can cause you to become dehydrated, and may cause dizziness or irritability.
- Bring gum. Many people experience ear popping or pressure in their heads when at a high altitude. Gum or hard candy can help to remedy this.
- Know the schedule in advance. If you have a three-hour layover, it's good to plan ahead by scheduling meals in advance. This way, you're not hungry while in the air.
- Be polite. Always try to be as polite as possible to the stewardesses and other passengers on the plane.
- Check other airports. Before you buy your ticket, look at the cost of flights from other airports that are within driving distance. This can mean the difference of hundreds of dollars in some cases.
